Any of you felt compelled to get me a Valentine's Day gift, I wouldn't complain about one of these. I would love to replace my 20 year old Spyderco !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I'm always tempted to get a Spyderco to carry. As it is today I'm carrying the Kershaw Blur my wife gave me for Christmas instead of my Benchmade Triage that I normally carry.

I've heard really good things about Spyderco. Just can't justify spending Benchmade money on something so goofy looking.

Ah, the Nishijin Chinese Lum. I actually have this in my knife rotation and carried it yesterday. Better get one soon as they were discontinued. I got my pair.

I want a new Spyderco as well. I've been carrying the same one every day for 6 years now and I want a new one so badly! The price is the only thing stopping me from getting a new one.

Sadly, it's not in the cards for the time being. But I would love to.

oh yeah, well, well, you're goofy looking! So there.

This one is $100, which isn't horrible, but still upper middle range. I love the lines on this design though. Very fluid shape changes.

I have waaaay too many knives, but that think I only have maybe 2 skeletons. Could be a third in there somewhere. strange.

Definitely a reasonable price for a Spyderco. This thing is great looking and I'll definitely be considering it when I get a new knife!

I got very lucky and won a DPx HEST folder. They are made by Lionsteel, and that thing is the toughest folding knife I have ever seen. Beefy D2 blade, huge liner lock with a lock on it. Thing is overbuilt beyond belief. I have used it brutally, and it didn't even flinch.

Well played.

You're missing out, the goofy designs are my favorites.
There's one thing that Spyderco does great: Ergonomics.
The handles are shaped to fit a hand, and usually the goofier they look the better they feel. Plus that high flat grind they like to use makes for an excellent slicing blade, and they're not afraid of producing different blade profiles for different tasks.
If you want to try out a Spyder without spending too much, look for a Cricket (one of my favorites), or a Dragonfly, or a Chicago, or a Cat, or a Kiwi... Or any of their small folders really (except for the Bug, it's more of a useful novelty). Even the Ladybug amazed me for how much cutting power and ergonomics can fit in a keychain sized knife.
If you want more of a reason, look for a Salt series knife with H-1 steel that is chemically impossible to rust and work hardens to become harder every time you sharpen it. Or look for a ZDP-189 knife, it's a steel that is the hardest and longest lasting edge I've ever experienced. (Both steels are even available in the Ladybug).

This was my old Spyderco knife I had. It was a gift from my dad and then some asshole stole it out of a locker at my old work. It's discontinued now so there's no way to get a new one unless i want to pay more than what its worth on ebay.
This is my current knife it's pretty good just wish it had a better handle.

I've never tried the Lum, though I'm pretty sure I'd like it.
I usually carry a Cricket or a Salsa or a Kopa, but I have a pretty large selection to choose from. I kinda got collecting there for a while when I had some excess money.
I'd love to get a Lil' Matriarch, I love the reverse S blade.

I don't know man. When I'm doing activities where you actually need a knife, I usually roll with a Leatherman or a fixed blade. When I'm carrying a basic folder, it means I'm not expecting to do anything that would require anything so advanced. So I kind of lean towards stuff I enjoy looking at for my everyday knives.

I'm not sure if Spyderco uses D2, but that is some amazingly tough steel. I have a HEST, and I have been batonning oak, beech, and poplar into firestarting sizes off of cut firewood, and it didn't even notice. Really time consuming to sharpen, but it takes forever to get to where you need to do it.

That was one of the Manix or Mantis collaborations wasn't it? Cool looking blade. SOG are pretty decent blades as well.

tell me about it i buy a knife like every month but i really like this Gerber as my main EDC. http://www.instructables.com/id/EDC-The-poc…

I believe it was. Spyderco has some of the coolest looking knives I've seen. The blade on my SOG is crazy sharp and holds an edge pretty well, but the handle feels cheap and way to light, but its sturdy.

For pure cutting tasks, a folder will work just as good as a fixed blade, but I can understand the want for a fixed blade if you're needing to do some chopping or prying or other abusive things.
For some heavy duty tasks, Spyderco makes some really heavy duty folding knives and some fixed blades too. The Manix is a favorite with people who use their folders hard, and the Military is a popular choice too. However, don't discount those little blades either. I've done some cutting chores with my Salsa and Lava that most people wouldn't consider with a 2 inch blade. One of my jobs included occasionally cutting through serpentine and V belts, and both of those performed amazingly.
But if you still want something that looks good first, they still have several options for that. My cricket is very people friendly, even with those who don't like knives are more curious about it than afraid of it. There are also etched and tattoed versions of the stainless handled knives, there are different colors of FRN, there are different options of G10 and carbon fiber, and there are even some stone and other material embellished versions. The best part? All of those knives still have the great ergo and sharp blades that Spyderco is known for.

I believe they used D2 as an option on the Military and Para, but I'm not sure how long it was offered or if they're still available.
I do have a small Benchmade with D2 though, it is a great steel for a little blade too, holds an edge forever.

I held off on Spyderco for a long time because of the looks...I agree if I'm carrying a knife around I'd like it to be functional and attractive. These guys aren't whistling dixie, though...had a couple Spydercos now and they've all been perfect EDC knives - ergonomic to use and practically disappear in the pocket. Pick up a Delica or something not ridiculously expensive and I wager you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah I may have to give it a shot
